Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

& Experiential Learning

Offered through Life Quality Resources

Liza Chartier, M.Ed., LCMHCA, NCC

Hello, and welcome!

I'm Liza, a nature-based therapist offering equine assisted psychotherapy (EAP) as an alternative to traditional office-based talk therapy.

As a lifelong horsewoman and the daughter of mental health professionals, I attended my first EAP/EAL training while in college. While in graduate school I interned at a local non-profit utilizing equine assisted psychotherapy. I've been working in the field (literally!) ever since.

My approach to counseling is person-centered, strengths-based, and integrative; tailoring sessions to the unique needs of each client. Sessions are based on developing your strengths and changing the patterns in your life that are no longer working. I have experience working with individuals of all ages and I particularly enjoy working with teens and emerging adults.

Training and certifications:

*M.Ed. - Clinical Counseling - North Carolina State University

*Nationally Certified Counselor

*Advanced training in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy with Natural Lifemanship

*Certified Complementary and Alternative Medicine

I am supervised by Amanda Hardenbrook, MS, NCC, LCMHCS  (919) 946-3853

Equine Therapy

Interactions with horses through EAP provide an opportunity to experience and practice what can often only be talked about in an office. For many, just being outside in the fresh air on the farm provides a clarity they are unable to find while confined to the fast pace of daily life.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy comes in many shapes and sizes. In general, it involves working with horse(s), a therapist, and an equine professional to meet treatment goals and personal growth. EAP is experiential, providing a space to problem solve, be creative, and investigate the ways you form, find meaning in, and manage relationships with yourself and others.

In addition to horse-specific work, you will learn various relaxation and stress management techniques that can be used outside of sessions. The skills developed while working with horses can be used to enrich all areas of your life.

Although EAP can include a riding component when appropriate, it is not hippotherapy, therapeutic riding, or a riding lesson. Our focus while working with the horses is not horsemanship – it is to provide mental health services and/or personal development.

No prior horse experience is needed to participate in EAP!

Equine assisted psychotherapy can be used as a complimentary model to traditional counseling services or as the sole method for meeting your goals.

EAP is appropriate for those seeking improvement with:

♞Social Skills       ♞Effective communication skills       ♞Forming and maintaining healthy relationships     ♞Self-regulation

♞Problem solving/creative thinking      ♞Self-esteem      ♞Confidence       ♞Self-awareness        ♞Healthy boundary setting

♞Leadership skills / teamwork      ♞Assertiveness        ♞Resilience       ♞Relaxation skills       ♞Mindfulness practice       ♞Self-care

I offer individual and group counseling for children (10+), adolescents, and adults.

I am available for in-office sessions in Raleigh, and nature based and equine assisted sessions on a farm in Wendell. There is also a “farm office” available if necessary.

Regardless of where we meet, my goal is to offer a safe place for you to explore yourself and your life, identify what is working and what isn’t, and develop new skills to free yourself of the patterns that are keeping you from being the best you.

Insurance Information

I do not bill insurance directly and am not on any health insurance panels (out-of-network).

Payment is due at time of service. If requested, I will provide you with monthly invoices (superbills) to submit for reimbursement or application to a plan deductible.

Reimbursement is not guaranteed. Please check with your health insurance company to determine out-of-network eligibility and to make sure you do not need prior-authorization for services.

Some good questions to ask include:

* Do I have out of network mental health benefits?

* What is my out of network deductible? Has it been met?

* How many therapy sessions per calendar year does my plan cover?

* What is the coverage amount per therapy session?

* Is approval required from my primary care physician?
